Our brief for this project was to introduce sustainable strategies to a retail and warehouse development. The main objectives were to reduce the energy loads on heating and cooling throughout the year, introduce natural lighting and ventilation and reduce the overall carbon footprint of the building.
The client already had an approved design and engineering documents for alterations to an existing shed when we started the project which imposed many constraints.
Out of the options we explored the project now includes; a first floor terrace carved into the building for light, ventilation and passive solar gain, a planted sun-shade on the western facade, an in-slab hydronic heating system and various other minor additions.
