Kite House

The design for the new pavilion extension evolved out of respect for the well formed original Federation house which makes a pair with an identical neighbour.

Little change was proposed to the original house, but the requirement for additional accommodation was incorporated into an attached two storey wing which takes a contemporary form so as not to compete with the character of the original house.

A light filled cross axis defines the boundary between the old and the new buildings.

The living, dining and kitchen in the new pavilion make a strong connection with the outdoor courtyard area that it creates and shares with the existing house.

The new main suite on the upper level is private and secluded with abundant light. It is accessed from the new stairwell which defines the end of the new building; wrapped in a combination of translucent cladding and exposed timber framing.
